Schlosshotel Hugenpoet 5-Star
Luxurious History Ruhr Valley Manor Hotel in Essen

Schlosshotel Hugenpoet MoatSchlosshotel Hugenpoet is a five-star superior luxury hotel in a peaceful park near Essen-Kettwig, where centuries of history meet contemporary hospitality. The moated castle, surrounded by mature trees, historic outbuildings, and a formal entrance gate, provides an elegant retreat in the heart of Germany's Rhine-Ruhr region.

Just south of Essen, this elegant retreat combines history with modern luxury. The name comes from a medieval description of the moat, the big puddle. Surrounded by landscaped parkland, set in the Ruhr Valley industrial heritage area and 20 minutes from Dusseldorf Airport, it's a destination that feels removed from the city, but just minutes from the Ruhr region's cultural attractions.

The manor land dates back to Charlemagne but the castle dates from the 17th Century, and was acquired in 1831 and restored in neo-Renaissance style. The lobby blends historic architecture with contemporary furnishings, while original details hint at the estate's aristocratic past. The intimate bar offers a relaxed setting for an evening drink, and Restaurant 1831, named for the estate's history, serves refined regional cuisine in a beautifully restored dining room.

Hugenpoet LobbyElegant style is featured in a classic manor house style antique furnishings and modern amenities, as if staying over at the count’s home. My room overlooked the courtyard and the Remise Bistro, in the former stables, which allows a little more relaxed dining. Breakfast is served in the Restaurant 1831, where made-to-order favorites provide a relaxed start to the day.

The present moated manor largely dates from a rebuilding completed in 1647, followed by extensive Neo-Renaissance renovations after Friedrich Leopold von Fürstenberg acquired the property in 1831. During World War II, the castle sheltered artworks from Essen's Museum Folkwang

The result is less a conventional luxury hotel than a historic manor estate where guests can experience German aristocratic heritage in a comfortable, modern setting. Located close to Essen and within easy reach of Düsseldorf, Hugenpoet makes an appealing base for exploring the Ruhr region while offering a destination worth visiting in its own right.. © Bargain Luxury Travel
