VIVA ONE: 7-DAY RHINE RIVER CRUISE
Düsseldorf to Basel
Luxury Travel on a Floating Hotel
One of the attractions of luxury river cruising is the simplicity of it. There is no daily search for a new hotel, no packing and unpacking, and no long transfers between destinations, no rental car, no train baggage lockers. You unpack once, settle into your cabin, and let the landscape come to you.
That was my experience aboard the VIVA ONE, traveling for seven days from Düsseldorf to Basel. It was my first river cruise and I was traveling solo, so I approached it without comparisons to other cruise lines. What I discovered was a style of travel that felt surprisingly close to staying in an upscale European 4-star hotel—except that the hotel was moving through the countryside.
My second-deck cabin at the mid-price level was efficiently compact but comfortable, a contemporary bathroom with room enough to move and a full shower, climate control, storage and a small desk. The glass door overlooking the river was the feature that made the greatest difference. Rather than simply being a place to sleep, the cabin became a private observation point. Ships passed by, villages appeared along the banks and the scenery changed throughout the day.
The VIVA ONE's public spaces continued that boutique-hotel atmosphere. The forward lounge was an especially pleasant place to spend time, and with the trip all-inclusive the drinking was free. Premium brand drinks and accommodating bartenders.
Dining was another part of the experience. Breakfast combined a buffet with made-to-order selections, followed by lunch and dinner. There were no assigned dining times, which gave meals a relaxed convenience rather than making them feel tied to a cruise schedule. The Bistro provided an additional more grill style dining option, final-night gala dinner offered some special menu items added a more formal touch.
VIVA's all-inclusive approach also contributes to the feeling of an uncomplicated luxu
ry stay. Meals and drinks are included. Excursions are an additional part of the experience, allowing passengers to leave the ship and explore the destinations in greater depth.
And there are plenty of destinations worth exploring. Casle Marksburg provides a glimpse inside a genuine medieval castle. Rüdesheim brings wine, historic streets and vineyard views. Heidelberg and Strasbourg add two very different cultural experiences, while Breisach provides another perspective on the Upper Rhine.
From the lounge, sun deck or cabin, the Rhine Valley becomes a constantly changing panorama of castles, vineyards and historic towns. The UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine is particularly impressive, with landmarks such as Stolzenfels, Marksburg, the Loreley and the hilltop castles above Oberwesel and Bacharach.
